There is no doubt that this has been the craziest summer transfer window of all time. From the “Financial Fair Play approved” Neymar and Kylian Mbappe deals to the ongoing soap opera at Arsenal. One big change from previous windows was the fight from clubs against player power for individuals wanting to leave. In previous seasons these players would have been sold but with the amount of money received by clubs in recent times, there has been a real shift and determination for clubs not to bow down. The 2018 summer transfer window could see an incredible number of top stars available for free, with the biggest losers being Arsenal as Alexis Sanchez seems certain to join Manchester City…. Could his teammate Mesut Ozil re-unite with former manager Jose Mourinho at Manchester United????
Who Could Be Available
The potential players who could be available to talk to clubs in January with view to a free transfer in the summer of 2018 is incredible. As aforementioned, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are available and it is ludicrous a manager like Arsene Wenger and a club like Arsenal could see arguably their two best players leave for major rivals on free transfers. With the crazy transfer market prices now how much would it cost to replace these players?
Like Arsenal, FC Barcelona have made a grave mistake and two icons in Andreas Iniesta and Lionel Messi are available to talk to clubs in January! There is no doubt that all the big hitters around the world will be licking their lips, especially Manchester City who may look to make a statement rivalling PSG with Neymar. Although it has always seemed Messi would never leave, with board room problems publicly highlighted by Neymar and Iniesta, this could be the summer Messi actually leaves the Catalan giants.
Two other players, not in the same elite level, but would be great additions to any squad are Everton’s Ross Barkley and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez.
Mourinho Always Knows What He Wants
This is not Football Manager whereby you can buy all the players for free, saving the game after each purchase. It would be lovely to sign all the players but Jose Mourinho is a manager who is very particular with his purchases, he knows what he wants! Sanchez will not be pursued as he is City bound. Nobody can say no to Messi and so enquiries will definitely be made although the sums of money offered by Manchester City and PSG may be difficult to match. Iniesta, although most likely to stay, probably will not be pursued due to his age.
Jose Gimenez is somebody who Mourinho has courted and there is a very good possibility he could sign as he is a perfect Jose Mourinho defender and that could signal the departure of Chris Smalling in favour of a young, hungry, combative centre half available for free. Ross Barkley is an interesting one because due to his age and talent, it would make sense to look into this transfer, however, he is not good enough to dislodge any of the first eleven, similar to Chelsea. Tottenham would be the most likely destination for Barkley and he would get game time and should thrive under Pochettino.
Managers would like 2 players for each position and with the departure of Wayne Rooney, Manchester United only have 1 player who plays there in Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Juan Mata is seen as a right winger by the manager and so Jesse Lingard is the only other player who will play there. If Jose wants a top squad with competition for places then the signing of Mesut Ozil, currently still only aged 28, would be a major coup. A summer consisting of potentially a left back (dependant on Luke Shaw progress this season) and a stellar signing like Antoine Griezmann together with free transfers of Jose Gimenez and Mesut Ozil would represent yet another fantastic transfer window with top players strengthening the squad.
But Mesut Ozil Is Rubbish & Doesn’t Run?
Everything needs to be put into context: Mesut Ozil is playing in a weak arsenal team with no leaders, poor mentality and with a manager who seems to be losing the plot. Arsenal is a club where you can down tools and you will still get to play every week as the manager doesn’t like controversy. The whole Alexis Sanchez debacle is a perfect example – the club is in a mess. Remember under David Moyes when Manchester United were in a mess – where were the top performances of proven stars like Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Robin Van Persie? The truth is that when the clubs is heading nowhere then players are not as motivated.
Contrast Mesut Ozil now compared to when he signed. Nevertheless, despite not playing great he is till the assist king. It is true that most of the time now he looks a luxury player, not willing or motivated to work who has the ability to show a piece of magic from time to time. He is not like Wayne Rooney who has lost his “explosion”, Ozil physically is in the same conditions to a few years ago – he has just lost his motivation and mojo. It says a lot that despite not being great, he is still a fixture in the German national team – a team that has Thomas Muller, Julian Draxler, Toni Kroos, Marco Reus and many others waiting in line.
It is simple, rekindle the flame, bring back the motivation and you have a devastating player on your hands.
Jose Turned a Self-Doubting Ozil From A Coward To A Genius
Arsene Wenger accepts poor weak performances.
Jose Mourinho DOES NOT!
Ozil has revealed how Jose Mourinho signed a self-doubting player unsure if he is good enough for Real Madrid.
“Train hard. Then play. Show me you want it and I’ll have you in my team. If you want to get better, I’ll make you better. Real Madrid isn’t too big a move for you. Real Madrid is the only right move. Trust me. I’ll turn you into a regular player. And then all the doors will be open to you. You’ll be able to show the world what you’re capable of. And, believe me, that’s a huge amount.” Mesut Ozil (August 2017)
It wasn’t all plain sailing for the German at Real Madrid and he showed some of the form he is currently showing for Arsenal, playing in patches and not working hard. Whereas Arsene Wenger lets Ozil get away with it, Jose Mourinho blasted the former Werder Bremen star.
“He said “You think two beautiful passes are enough?! You think you’re so good that 50 per cent is enough?” He pauses. Stares at me with his dark brown eyes. I stare back. Like two boxers at the stare-down before the first round. He shows no emotion. Just waits for a response from me. How much I hate him right now. And I love Mourinho actually. Then he said “Oh, are you giving up now? You’re such a coward. What do you want? To creep under the beautiful, warm shower? Shampoo your hair? To be alone? Or do you want to prove to your fellow players, the fans out there, and me, what you can do.”” Mesut Ozil (March 2017)
Mourinho got the best out of Ozil with 25 goals and 60 assists in just 147 games, a player he calls a ‘genius’ and ‘unique’ with a ‘feeling for magic passes’.
What Will Mesut Ozil Bring To United
It is not every day you can get a player of the calibre of Mesut Ozil on a free transfer.
It is not often you can take an important player, a number 10 from one of your rivals.
It is not often you can take a major player from a rival manager you despise.
Jose Mourinho will be mulling over these questions. He knows Ozil, he knows what he can bring. When on his game, Ozil is a phenomenal player and one of the best number 10’s in the game who regular produces goals and assists. He is a big game player that can make the difference in big games.
Sir Alex Ferguson nicknamed Ozil as “The Ghost” because he pops up everywhere and is so difficult to pick up. In the right team, with leaders and a strong manager Ozil would thrive and if he had Pogba and Matic behind him with the likes of Martial, Rashford, Lukaku and maybe even a stellar signing like Griezmann it could be a marriage made in heaven. If Ozil is surrounded by pace and power, Ozil will be the talisman, the main playmaker who pulls the strings.
If he were to arrive, he would not just walk into the team as he would have to beat off competition from Henrikh Mkhitaryan which is perfect for Manchester United. The competition between Martial and Rashford for the left-wing spot is fascinating and both players are fighting hard and playing very well. If Mourinho could have a battle between Mkhitaryan and Ozil, what a fabulous scenario for the Portuguese manager.
And he could have all of this….. FOR FREE!
