Holders Manchester United open their defence of the Carabao cup against Burton Albion at the theatre of dreams tomorrow (20/09/2017).
Jose Mourinho’s quest to be the greatest ever manager in the competition begins tomorrow with the visit of Burton Albion, managed by Nigel Clough, the son of Brian Clough, considered to be one of the greatest managers of all time. Ironically, it is Brian Clough who is the most successful manager in the league cup.
Let’s take a look at the teams.
It’s been a flying start for the Red Devils. Manager Jose Mourinho often uses the word “CONFIDENCE”. The confidence is high and the mood ecstatic. Perfect conditions for starting the defence of the Cup.
When it comes to domestic cup games, it has become more of a ritual that big clubs rotate. We can expect Jose Mourinho to do the same. Players like Romero, Darmian, Carrick have been on the bench for the best part of the season so far. So, we can expect all of them to start come tomorrow.
In central defensive positions, expect Jose to go with Smalling and Lindelof. This is a perfect game for the Swiss to make his long awaited debut in English football.
Next we move onto the Left Back’s position, which is a minor weak link in the squad.
Shaw, of course, is a great talent. But he is nowhere near the talent he was before the horror double leg break he suffered in Eindhoven. He is expected to return to the United first team fold after a foot injury suffered back in April. If Shaw performs well tomorrow, he has a good chance of becoming Jose’s first choice LB for the Premier League and the Champions League.
Captain Carrick will play his first competitive match of the season unless he suffers any late injury. He is expected to start alongside the energetic Ander Herrera and the young Scott Mctominay.
This is a deserved chance for Scott Mctominay as he looks to cement his position as a first team player.
Forward line could see Rashford and Martial playing together for the first time this season. Though, one has to start a striker and one in the wings. Lingard will be the other forward.
PLAYER TO WATCH OUT FOR:
LUKE SHAW. Making a return from injury and with a point to prove, this could just be his night. With Jose preferring for only full back to attack in games and Darmian being defensive minded, this could be the Shaw shows his attacking prowess from defensive positions and also the crosses he provides are brilliant.
Just the game he needs to show his value to Mourinho.
Championship club Burton Albion come to this fixture with mixed form. Although they have got 4 points in their last two games, they have just won 3 out of the 8 games they have played in all competitions. They beat Cardiff City away by 1-2 to make it to this round.
They are 19th in the Championship table, which certainly isn’t good reading. But Nigel Clough’s sides are well drilled and trained for big days. Expect them to give us a god fight.
PLAYER TO WATCH OUT FOR:
MARVIN SORDELL. The former Burnley Forward’s career has been a stop-start due to injuries and he will be looking to prove a point against a Premier League giant.
Score Prediction: MUN 4-0 BAFC.
