Match Preview: Southampton vs Manchester United

High flying Red Devils travel to the south coast to take on the saints in a testing Premier League game at the st.mary’s stadium. This is a big test of title credentials for Jose Mourinho’s men as they visit Southampton. This could be the toughest test of the Premier League season so far as Southampton are a strong side at home.

Now we can have a look at both the teams.

Jose Mourinho could not be more happier after the kind of start his Manchester United team have had. It was beautified more as the reserves played a strong game against Burton, swamping them by 4-1. This underlines the strength in depth we have in the squad this season. Strength in depth is the most important characteristic for a deep title challenge.

The pace in the forward line is also a factor for the Reds’ marauding start to the season. Lukaku has certainly brought his ability to run in behind the defence to good effect as the pace of Mkhitaryan, Rashford/Martial and the intelligence of Juan Mata and, of course, Henrikh Mkhitaryan creates more chances for him to score. It is turning out to be deadly weapon for us this season.

Jose the pragmatist pulled off a stunning coup on former club Chelsea to sign Nemanja Matic. And the Serb is helping the term PRAGMATIST to be erased near Jose’s name anymore. He helps begin attacks from deep and he has not been this effective attacking wise at Chelsea, prompting the United manager to say he has not seen Matic playing like this before.

Eric Bailly has turned into the best defender in the league. He is physical, hard and strong on the tackle. Phil Jones has profited from Eric’s no-nonsense approach. He is calmer while defending than ever before.

It will be interesting to see who Jose Mourinho selects at left back. Luke Shaw is fit and played 45 minutes. Daley Blind played there for the first 45 minutes of the same game. Ashley Young played against Everton and Darmian is also an option as United play away from home.

Expect De Gea and Valencia to return.

Another problem is who Jose selects to partner Matic is centre midfield. Ander Herrera was fantastic against Burton. Marrouane Fellaini played a decent game against his former club Everton and Carrick was also superb in the victory midweek.

The strength in depth strikes again as all the three options for playing LW played brilliantly midweek.

Rashford, Martial and Lingard all were top class. So, Jose has a headache in that position as well.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

In away games playing at NO.10, Mkhitaryan’s pace, trickery and creativity to play Lukaku and the wingers in could be crucial.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton are off to a decent start in the Premier League. They lost their last home game just after the international break but recovered to beat Crystal Palace away last time out.

They have a good squad and have signed shrewdly. Keeping hold of Virgil Van Dijk was also a like a new signing as the player wanted to move to Liverpool.

Mario Lemina.

The Gabonese international signed from Juventus has had a good start at Southampton.

A strong box-to-box midfielder, he has got the team going with his energy and strength.

It will be a tough game no doubt. But if United continue what they are doing, then I see United winning it.

LAST MEETING: 0-0, MAY 18, 2017. ST.MARY’S.
